Abstract
The DeReAL project aims to develop a methodology for controlling and evaluating the impact of adding aluminum scrap to the production of primary aluminum products, thus decreasing the need of energy consumption and contributing to environmental footprint reduction of a smelter. This paper studies the effect of scrap addition in the microstructure of several aluminum alloys taking into account the specifications. Characterization of the Al alloys via metallography combining optical microscopy and SEM/EDX analysis and mechanical testing were performed for several alloys. Overall evaluation of all the microstructural variables revealed a path for determining the final properties of the as-cast products and identifying which process steps are critical and must adapt to the increased use of aluminum scrap.
